For many this event during the Sunday of the 1st May bank holiday weekend kicks off the show season, even though there usually have already been a few events during the first few weeks of April. Tradition almost has it that the Stanford Hall weekend is characterised by good sunny weather. Friday and Saturday this year certainly were very nice, warm and sunny. Despite the slightly less promising weather forecast for Sunday, with showers predicted, the weather decided to pay homage to the tradition of "No rain during Stanford Hall".
It was once again a hugely enjoyable day, with a wealth of traders, albeit the majority of them addressing the needs of the aircooled fraternity. Some very interesting cars were in the car park (yours truly even spotted a LHD 16V GTX Mk2 Scirocco, possibly one out of the original 10 that VW imported to the UK, never giving the UK market a RHD version). The real attraction was, no doubt, to be had on 3 locations this year. Each of these 3 locations were very well filled with Corrados.
The CCGB had 2 locations to put our cars on display: The usual Corrado Club Stand was located along the riverside, opposite the first row of traders. We managed to squeeze in 6 cars this year, possibly the best attendance for a long time.
In addition to this, we were given a Club Display Area to accommodate 8 cars, 7 of which turned up. This allowed each car a bit more space than those on the Club Stand & we were even able to set-up a gazebo and seats. This display area was located on the other side of the central organisers' pavillion.
Then we still had the usual suspects battling it out in the Concours d'Elegance, this year with the addition of our new treasurer. This gave us a presence of 3 Corrados in the Concours section.
In total we managed to show the public 16 Corrados, all at one very well-attended show.
4 of the 5 entries in Class 14 (VW Coupes) were very tidy Corrados. One of which was a low mileage G60, only 18,000 miles on the clock !! The engine bay certainly looked like it, as indeed did the whole car. Enough reason to wet the owners' appetite to join the CCGB!
Towards the end of the day, the prize award ceremony took place. The winner of class 14 was our very own Chris Gaskell, 2nd place went to Judith Zerniak, our treasurer, and 3rd place (I do have to mention this, of course, being a Scirocco freak), went to a very tidy Mk1 Storm Scirocco in class 14.
Paul Kippax achieved a very commendable 3rd prize in the Superclass.
I am already looking forward to next year's event, as this event is starting to become one of my favourites: The mix of good weather, great cars, great and relaxed atmosphere, seeing loads of friends and acquaintances again, often for the first time in the new show season, just does it for me.
